Monroe, named after James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States, was originally an agricultural community, but it is increasingly becoming more suburban in character. However, it has not completely let go of its past. There are several active farms in the Town, and also, there are over a hundred homes standing that date back to the time of the Revolutionary War.
Monroe is very protective of its rural feeling. About 45% of the land is one-acre zoning, 25% is two-acre zoning, while 17% is three-acre. There is still land available for homeowners who want to build. There are only a few Condominium complexes in the Town.
Many of the outdoor activities in the Town take place within the 309-acre William E. Wolfe Park. A dammed section of the Pequonnock River has created the 16-acre Great Hollow Lake, which is located within the Park. The Lake is where visitors can swim, fish, sunbathe, or have fun with non-motorized water vehicles. There also is a 25-meter Community swimming pool and a magnificent playground for kids. At one time, there was a rail line that went through the Park, but it was abandoned in 1962. Today, the path of the line has been converted into the Housatonic Valley Rail Trail, and is used by hikers and bicycle riders alike. The Trail runs from the southern tip of Trumbull up to the northern end of Newtown’s Botsford section.
The 136-acre Webb Mountain Park is also located in Monroe, along with the 171-acre Webb Mountain Discovery Zone. A network of great hiking trails crisscross both Parks, including the Paugussett Trail, one of Connecticut’s “Blue Blaze” hiking trails.
There are more resources for active folks. For those who enjoy golf, the 18-hole Whitney Farms public golf course is a challenging venue. Masuk High School has an indoor pool, and there are daily times set aside for public use.
Monroe has a first-rate public education system. In addition to general and honors academic programs, Monroe offers programs for special education needs. The business and technical education programs are strong, and include work experience opportunities. There are three elementary schools in the Town that go through the 4th grade, a middle school complex consisting of two schools, Chalk Hill Middle School for Grades 5 - 6, and Jockey Hollow School for Grades 7 - 8, and Masuk High School. St. Jude School is private, and offers a 2nd grade through 12th grade curriculum. There also are three private schools that offer a 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum. Nine houses of worship are located in the Town, two of which have a church affiliated nursery school.
