Bridgeport is known as the “Park City” because of it has over 1,300 acres of beautifully designed public parks, including the beloved local gem, Beardsley Park, home of Beardsley Zoo. Seaside Park, located on the Long Island Sound, and Beardsley Park were both created by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who designed Manhattan’s famous Central Park.
Along its coastline, you’ll find the longest public waterfront in the State with its sandy beaches, the Fayerweather Island Lighthouse (1823), rich river estuaries, a natural harbor with all the maritime activities of marinas, fishing and oyster boats, ocean-going freighters, sight-seeing and charter cruises, and Captain’s Cove Seaport, the home port of one of the world’s tallest ships, the HMS Rose (1757). The HMS Rose is the only Class-A size tall ship in the United States that is U.S. Coast Guard-certified to be a sailing school vessel. By the way, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is located in New London, CT, which is only a short drive from Bridgeport up I-95.
In addition to the beach at Seaside Park, Bridgeport has more outstanding recreational features. The 36-hole Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course, is a public venue, known affectionately as “The Wheel,” and will challenge most everyone’s golf skills – although located in Fairfield, CT, Fairchild Wheeler is run by the City of Bridgeport. Bridgeport also is home to the annual Barnum Festival, a 30-day long celebration that leads up to the Fourth of July. The festival draws young and old from the entire region by delighting everyone with its many fun-filled activities, concerts, and the Great Street Parade. A new “happening” in the City is the annual three day Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival held each summer at Seaside Park.
Bridgeport is a blend of both yesterday and today. Originally established as an industrial center and port city, it has more designated historic districts than any other city in Connecticut. The City features several hundred individual buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, officials from the City of Bridgeport are working together with several large developers who see the rich potential in restoring a vibrant downtown Bridgeport. Housing in the City is almost equally divided between single-family detached homes, condominiums, and multi-unit homes.
Black Rock is one of the City’s most renowned historic districts. Here, you’ll find St Mary’s-by-the-Sea, a neighborhood nestled near Ash Creek marshlands where large Colonial homes and cozy beach Bungalows overlook unspoiled views of the Long Island Sound and the Fayerweather Island Lighthouse in Black Rock Harbor. It is a wonderful place to live, especially for those who have always dreamed of home near the seaside.
Not to be overlooked are the City’s two renowned hospitals, Bridgeport Hospital and St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Each has as associated college—the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing and St. Vincent’s College. Bridgeport is also the home town of the University of Bridgeport, Housatonic Community College, and Sacred Heart University (whose campus straddles both Bridgeport and Fairfield). There are more than forty-five public schools and twelve private schools within the City that range from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, plus a public technical high school. There are over 100 diverse places of worship in the City.
